Shelf Life: Math Books We Actually Used (Geometry)

If your kids have read Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi, that's usually the one everyone starts with. These are the four lesser-known ones sitting on our shelf, and they hold up just as well.

Sir Cumference and the First Round Table by Cindy Neuschwander

King Arthur needs a table shape where every knight can see each other during meetings. Sir Cumference and Lady Di of Ameter try rectangle after rectangle before landing on a shape that finally works, along the way introducing circumference, diameter, and radius as things that actually solve a real problem, not just vocabulary.

Sir Cumference and All the King's Tens by Cindy Neuschwander

This one topped Dragon of Pi as my kids' actual favorite in the series, no contest. Sir Cumference and Lady Di throw King Arthur a surprise birthday party and get completely overwhelmed trying to count the guests arriving one at a time. The fix is grouping people by tens, then hundreds, then thousands. We worked through it with a giant pile of gummy bears, grouping and regrouping until place value stopped being a vocabulary word and started being something they could actually see.

Sir Cumference and the Great Knight of Angleland by Cindy Neuschwander

Radius sets off to earn his knighthood carrying nothing but a mysterious medallion, and has to measure his way through a castle labyrinth to find a missing king. The medallion turns out to be a protractor, and the labyrinth won't let him through without knowing acute from obtuse.

Sir Cumference and the Sword in the Cone by Cindy Neuschwander

King Arthur hides his sword and challenges his knights to find it first. Sir Cumference's family helps Radius's friend Vertex track it down by working through cubes, pyramids, cylinders, and cones, since the sword's hiding spot depends on knowing which shape is which. This one's a genuinely good introduction to 3D shapes, and it's worth having paper and tape on hand before you start. My kids built their shapes from scratch and loved it, though that approach can frustrate a kid who wants cleaner results faster. Printable 3D models can be found everywhere online and are just cut and fold and work just as well if that fits your kid better.

Shape Up! by David A. Adler

This is the one that actually landed with my four and five year olds, playful and pun-heavy, built around how a handful of basic shapes combine and rearrange into something new. Pair it with a set of tangrams and it turns into an easy, low-pressure activity for that age, no full Sir Cumference quest required yet.

None of these are subtle about being math books wearing a story costume, and that's fine. Kids who like a quest don't seem to mind.
